News from Ibiza Town

Rubbish
This photograph was captured at 8.00 o"clock one morning last week while a large cruise liner was moored at the Botafoc Marina. Many locals have complained that this is not the sort of image that should be presented to visitors, who may be seeing the Island for the first time.

The Old Town
It seems amazing that some people can have such bad habits, when it was well publicized that the Town Hall had spent a considerable amount of time and money to clean the pebbly beach of Sa Baix de sa Penya. Only a few short months ago the area was pristine after 3.5 tons of rubbish was removed by volunteers and workers from the company contracted to clean the town, but now the same area is once again in a very sorry sight. A settee, a butane gas bottle, six or seven broken plasma televisions, two water heaters and several bicycles were the most recognizable articles when the Environment Councillor, Joan Mayans, visited the area last week. He commented that it seems impossible that people can behave in such an anti-social manner and that the image is not very welcoming to the many people who arrive at the port by boat or the tourists visiting the lookout spot on top of the cliffs. He mentioned that it is impossible to mount security 24/7, neither is there any point in installing cameras as they would be vandalized. Although the idea of raising the level of the fences was mooted in January when the last clean-up operation took place, this has been discounted as it is in a protected zone and permission would be difficult to obtain.

Yacht Club
“A Sea of Possibilities” is the title of the therapeutic programme which the Yacht Club is running for handicapped people during the summer. This is the eighth consecutive year that similar ventures have been organized and a total of 250 people were able to take advantage of the venture in 2011.

Complaint
The Residents’ Association of the es Clot area has appealed to authorities that work on the construction of the new sa Bodega school be restarted as soon as possible. Excavation work for the foundations came to a standstill more than a year ago when valuable archaeological relics were unearthed and the plans had to be revised in order to preserve as much of the old villa, dating back several centuries, as possible. Residents and shopkeepers maintain that the area is very dirty and pedestrian access is difficult due to the security fences which have been erected around the perimeter.
