Ferré
After further investigation into the affairs of the hotelier, Fernando Ferré Cardó, who remains in prison accused of fraud, money laundering,
falsification of documents, and crimes against his workforce, it was found that he had been using trademarks of well-known establishments
on the island to get the attention of potential visitors. Included in the more than three hundred limited companies in his possession were
“Hotel Apartments Café del Mar”, “Hotel Apartments Café Mambo” and “Space Apartments”, all well known businesses on the island which
had never had dealings with Ferré.
He sold beds via the internet in the “Hotel Catalina-Café del Mar”, and while the Catalina lies close to the famous sunset spot,
it does not have any ties with it. The owner of Café del Mar, Ramon Guiral, said that he was only made aware of the situation late
last year, after receiving an e-mail from girls “complaining about the bad service that they had experienced while holidaying in the
“Café del Mar, San Antonio”. He then contacted Ferré, who promised to remove any mention of the Café from the website, although
it seems this was never done.
A spokesperson for the Space Discotheque stated “This is the first that we have heard of it, but now we have been informed we will
lodge an official complaint, as we have the name registered in all fields, and will be handing the matter over to our lawyers”.
Meanwhile the Hotel Federation of Ibiza and Formentera continued to demand the immediate closure of all of the illegal GPS hotels,
which amount to some 2,500 beds. The group claimed the Island Council had had enough time to “fix” the situation and now was the
time to act. Their anger was not appeased after it became clear that despite promises by the new administrator, Javier Perelló, the
company was continuing to sell properties which had an official closure order from the Island Council, although the latter reminded the
Hotel Association that because GPS had appealed the original resolution, the final decision on the establishments in question was not yet
definitive.
Meanwhile, Perelló announced that the company would have to seek an additional loan in order to pay the June salaries, something
which is keeping the workforce within the company, some of whom are pictured above at a meeting, on edge.
