Road Works
One of the most important undertakings planned by the Island Council eventually got underway last week, as improvements to the San Miguel road began in earnest. The construction company, Acciona Infraestructuras SA, formally commenced work to widen the road which runs from Can Clavos to the village of San Miguel, accompanied by various authorities, including the President of the Balearic Government, Francesc Antich, the President of the Consell, Xico Tarres, and the mayors of the two boroughs affected by the road, San Juan’s, Antoni Mari, and Santa Eulalia’s, Vicent Mari. It was decided to start the project on this section as it receives the least traffic during the summer months and will cause far less disruption.

With a total budget of almost €12 million, the work will be carried out in various phases, and should be completed within twelve months. Included in the project are two sets of traffic lights, one in San Miguel and the other in Santa Gertrudis, pavements, 31 bus stops and a cycle lane, whilst all the electricity and telephone cables will be passed underground. A milestone from 1920, the date of the original road, has been preserved.

Several land owners have been affected by compulsory purchase orders and have already received 70 per cent of the agreed compensation, with the other 30 per cent being paid when the works are completed.

The group of dignitaries also visited the site of archaeological remains which have been unearthed near San Miguel. Walls, probably used for the cultivation of grape vines, have been discovered as well as the foundations of a building, thought to have been used by the Romans to make wine. It might be necessary to re-route the cycle lane to preserve these findings, but the island Transport Councillor, Albert Prats, said it would not affect the current work, and that a decision on this would be taken shortly.
