Burns Night – Second Sitting
Last Wednesday we joined in the fun of the Burns Night Supper at The Terrace in Cala Llonga. The evening followed the traditional lines starting with the Celtic Grace, the toast to the Haggis. We then had our choice of Leek and potato soup, or the delicious Cullen Skink, smoked haddock and potato soup. The Haggis was then addressed by Ian, orated in his best Scottish accent, although a bit of “Portsmouthonian” kept creeping in, before the traditional Haggis, or the very popular vegetarian one, was served with the tatties and neeps plus our tot of the best whiskey. Dessert was either Tipsy Laird or Cranachan, two excellent homemade traditional Scottish dishes with lots of calories. To add a touch of difference to the evening Michele provided us with a small dictionary of Scottish dialect from which each table had to make a poem using such words as Aboon – above, Braid – broad/wide, Drouthy – thirsty, Kytes – stomachs and Skinking – watery, plus a few others. It really was hilarious to hear what people came up with especially when they tried to read it with a Scottish accent. A prize was awarded to Jack (Jock) McCue, a true Scot, who’s very amusing poem highlighted the fact that Robbie Burns couldn´t make it to the supper as, of course, there are no direct flights. Another absentee was one of Ian´s heroes, Harry Rednapp, who was expected to be playing live music, but “allegedly” he was too busy fiddling elsewhere! A brief Toast to the Lassies from Ian with an even briefer response from Michelle, while their rusty, sorry trusty, waitress Lyn attended to most of our needs, brought a close to a successful night of celebration of The Baird’s birthday.

A Tragic Occurrence
Gora, a 6 year old student from Santa Eulalia Primary School, passed away on Saturday 21st Jan in Can Misses Hospital. He had been admitted with severe gastric pains on the previous day and was diagnosed with gastroenteritis. He appeared to be recovering well, and even asked for food at one point, but then, inexplicably, his condition worsened and he entered into a state of shock. Doctors and nurses tried in vain to stabilize his condition, but sadly he passed away shortly after.
An autopsy has been carried out to establish the cause of his death, but at the time of going to press the result was not yet known.
A Muslim ceremony has taken place on the island however the family are from Senegal, and have very limited resources, so an appeal has been set up for anyone who would like to make a contribution to cover the expenses of the transfer to Senegal, the funeral and airline tickets for the family.
Donations can be made to the following account:
LA CAIXA: 2100 4508 81 2200033213
Essential.  Please put as the concept of the donation the word "GORA".
There are also donation tins available in some popular establishments around Santa Eulalia, including Bar Cosmi, White Island Shop, Herbasana health foods, Al.lots toys and several other places.

Anything you can do would be very much appreciated. For contact information see the article headed World Cancer Day above, or take it along on the day.
